GENESIS

The Welding Research Institute is the premier national research centre of India in the field of welding and allied areas.  WRI was established by Government of India under the aegis of the Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, Tiruchirappalli, India, a premier public sector undertaking with the assistance of UNIDO / UNDP. The institute has assimilated high level of technological excellence in nearly four decades and has assisted the Indian industries in applying the latest welding and allied techniques to upgrade quality & productivity. 

Since its inception on November 1, 1975, WRI has been constantly interacting with world renowned institutions for updating the knowledge base on latest technologies and transferring it to the Indian industry sector.

With following objectives

  • To carryout need based fundamental & applied research in the field of welding processes, technology, consumables, design, equipment and weldability of materials.

  • provide quality control, consultancy and specialised testing services to fabrication industries in India.

  • To provide educational & training facilities in welding and non- destructive testing for all levels of personnel including welders, technicians, supervisors & engineers of Indian Industries.
  • To keep abreast with the latest developments in welding technology elsewhere in the world and to serve as an effective centre for the dissemination of knowledge through conduct of technical conferences and seminars for the benefit of Indian industries and by rendering technical assistance to educational institutions in the country.

  • To coordinate with the Indian & International standardisation institutions for the formulation of standards in welding.

  • To upgrade the status of welding. -technology. quality & productivity to International levels in order to bridge the technological gap.




Major Milestones

        1975-85                  Establishment of welding and testing facilities with UNDP aid

        1986-92                  Interaction with Japan Welding Research Institute

        1993-99                  Expertise enhancement through collaboration with 11 German Institutions through GTZ
                                       Programme

        2000-04                  Few welding facilities added through Department of Science and Technology(DST),
                                       Ministry of Information and Technology(MIT) and Government of India(GOI)

        2005-06                  Protocol of Intention signed with PWI,Ukraine for joint working on selected processes
                                       SENSE membership of AWS-USA obtained

        2010-11                  As a part of Vision 2012 plan COE-phase l (Advanced Fabrication Technology)
                                       implemented Joint PG certification programme launched in 2008 along with PSG-Tech        

        2011-12                  MoU with JWRI,Japan and DVS,Germany

        2012-17                  Set out on an ambitious mission of becoming a world class institute

        2017-19                  Facility Augmentation-Established state-of-art fabrication and characterization technologies
                                       matching the prowess of world class institute

        2019-Onwards       Continuing the journey as a world class institute
